What is telework, when is it permitted, and what steps do I need to take to obtain approval?
Telework (telecommuting) allows employees whose primary work location is an assigned EWU worksite, to use technology to work from home or an alternate worksite on a limited basis not to exceed one day per week.
Eastern Washington University requires prior approval for employees to telework. EWU 401-09: Teleworking describes standards and procedures for employees to arrange a telework agreement.
For incidental telework which is short term, due to inclement weather, university closure, family care, and household needs, supervisory approval is necessary, but a formal plan is not required.
For ongoing telework, which is limited to one year or less and may only be authorized if numerous requirements are met, including but not limited to:
- The arrangement will allow the employee to perform the essential functions of the position effectively and productively and the employee has proven the ability to do so,
- There is sufficient amount of work being proposed,
- The employee has a proven ability to work independently,
- Effective communication with the supervisor, co-workers and customers is possible, and
-
The employee has the ability to be flexible about the telework arrangement, respond to all operational needs.
If you wish to submit a telework request, use the Telework Request Form which can be found in Forms – Human Resources (ewu.edu).
