Gradebook - Unexpected Zeros in the Gradebook
There is a known issue that may occur in Canvas when copying courses from previous terms. This issue happens when the Gradebook setting for “automatically apply grade for missing submissions” is turned on and old due dates are copied from previous terms. This may cause grades for assignments, quizzes and tests to initially be set to zero for students.
To address this, Instructional Technology recommends temporarily turning off the “automatically apply grade for missing assignments” before importing or exporting previous courses. In addition, when importing courses ITWS suggests using the “Adjust events and due dates” to adjust due dates for the upcoming term. Once the content has been imported and due dates have been set, “automatically apply grade for missing submissions” can be turned back on.
To address this issue in current term courses:
For courses that have not yet started but already have zeros in the gradebook, you can reset your course to remove existing content. Once the course is reset, go ahead and re-import the course using the suggestions stated above. This will successfully remove the initial zeros for the students. NOTE - resetting your course will also remove any edits you have made or addtional content that has been added.
For courses that have already started, zeros can manually be fixed once the old due dates for affected assignments are edited to reflect current term due dates. After those dates have been updated, zeros in the gradebook can manually be deleted.
